Diabetes is a major health concern in the United States. According to the American Diabetes Association, about 34.2 million Americans — or 10.5 percent of the population — have diabetes, and 26.8 percent of Americans age 65 and older have diabetes.
If you have diabetes or are pre-diabetic, you already know to monitor your blood sugar closely. However, did you know you should do the same with your eyes?
Diabetes can have a major impact on your vision. In fact, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in adults.
As November is Diabetic Eye Disease Month, now is a great time to learn how diabetes affects the eyes and what steps diabetics should take to protect their vision.
