Upside down lighthouse, Bird Sanctuary, and an Exiled King
Off the coast of Antrim is a tiny island called Rathlin. Boasting picturesque views and the largest seabird colony in the United Kingdom, the island also is home to Ireland’s upside-down lighthouse. Construction on this architecturally unique building began in 1912 and took five years to complete. Built to fit precariously on and over a cliff edge, a special pier and inclined railway had to be assembled to create the lighthouse.
