Some of the best childhood memories are created between the covers of a good book. Books take kids on adventures that they may not be able to imagine all on their own. However, it’s not all just fun and games. Access to books from a young age has been shown to be critical for language acquisition and student achievement. Unfortunately for many, this critical piece is missing.
Struggles with reading and access to literacy was a huge concern for the students in Bridgeport Independent School District. With access to books, poverty, and a lack of exposure to reading all stacked against them, students were struggling. The district, in partnership with local businesses, took on the task of doing something about this problem. Hence, Wash n’ Read was born.
