Originally known as the “Neutral Strip” about the time of the Louisiana Purchase, Lake Charles was part of a sliver of no-man’sland between East Texas and Western Louisiana. Due to a dispute over boundary lines, local officers of both Spain and the United States agreed to not regulate or monitor the area with militia until the boundaries could be established.
